Becoming A Proverbs 31 Woman [Before You Say 'I Do']

We've all heard of her before.

The Proverbs 31 woman.

She is the epitome of biblical womanhood and reaching her level seems almost unattainable. How many of us actually like to wake up early in the morning? Or have every hour of our day filled with productive tasks? Becoming a woman like this may seem impossible but whether you skip this chapter of Proverbs intentionally or feel like you can't reach such a standard of perfection, there are some great lessons we need to learn before we marry someday.

1. Be a virtuous woman. The very first description we receive of the Proverbs 31 woman is that she is virtuous (has valor). Are you pursuing your education? Are you working a full-time job and saving your money? Are you ministering to small children at Sunday school or working with your church's youth group? God has given you strengths and gifts that you are using for His glory. You are a virtuous woman!

2. Are you trustworthy? When I first started in youth ministry, I often heard that it was hard for young women to trust each other. Comparison, jealousy, and fear often get between women when we should be cheering each other on! That's what it means to be a virtuous woman. We can celebrate each other and our accomplishments just like we'll need to encourage our future husbands.

Singleness is a great time to become a trustworthy friend so that you can become a trustworthy wife. After all, shouldn't your husband also be your best friend?

3. See the needs around you. The blessing of singleness is that we can see what other people are going through. Paul tells us that when we get married, our attention becomes divided between serving the Lord and serving our husbands. Yet, we see that when the Proverbs 31 woman sees someone in need, she's not afraid to extend herself to help them. It's not about the what we do but who we do it for. Having compassion for the people in our churches and our communities is a beautiful way of glorifying God.

4. You can laugh at the future. Fear and doubt can come crashing in when we start thinking about the parts of our lives that we can't control, especially when it comes to our future husbands. But a woman who trusts in the Lord can laugh because she knows that no weapon formed against her will prosper. God is completely in control and as long as we are walking in love and obedience, He will take care of us.

5. Reverently fear the Lord. When your first priority is God, everything else will fall into place. We don't need to rely on charm or beauty, things that fade and change. Instead, our love for God grows deeper with every year that we serve Him. Every decision we make and every action we take can be a reflection of that love. Not only will our future husbands praise us but one day, we'll stand before the Lord and hear Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

So next time you read about the Proverbs 31 woman, I pray that you'll see yourself - a woman of strength, honor, and valor.
